SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won to accelerate Gwangju semiconductor cluster construction

SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won has expressed a commitment to accelerate the construction of a semiconductor cluster in the Honam region, specifically targeting sites in Gwangju. During a recent site visit to the planned locations near the Gwangju military airport and ammunition depot, Chey emphasized the need for rapid production capacity expansion to meet the surging demand for semiconductors driven by artificial intelligence.

Chey noted that while the completion timeline for the Yongin semiconductor cluster has already been moved up by 12 years, current projections suggest that additional facilities may be necessary. He stated that the group intends to begin construction in Gwangju as quickly as possible, even if challenges regarding power and water infrastructure arise, provided the timing can be synchronized.

This strategic move comes amid industry forecasts, such as those from Gartner, predicting significant increases in DRAM prices and revenue through 2030. To support this industrial development, the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City has pledged approximately 6 trillion won in integrated financial support to ensure essential infrastructure, such as electricity and water, is secured in time for the investment.
