SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won to expedite Honam semiconductor cluster construction

SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won has announced plans to expedite the construction of a semiconductor cluster in the Honam region, specifically targeting the Gwangju military airport site. During a visit to the site on the 9th, Chey emphasized the need to accelerate supply to meet rapidly increasing global semiconductor demand.

The planned Honam semiconductor fab is expected to be approximately two-thirds the size of the Yongin cluster, though Chey noted that the scale could expand if demand continues to grow. He expressed a strong commitment to beginning construction as soon as possible, stating that the company would proceed with construction even if the establishment of necessary power and water infrastructure faces delays.

This development is part of a larger government-backed initiative involving SK hynix and Samsung Electronics, which aim to build a total of four memory fabs in the region. Local authorities, including Gwangju Mayor Min Hyung-bae, have pledged to support the project by ensuring essential infrastructure, talent cultivation, and living conditions for workers are secured to facilitate a stable construction and operational environment.
