SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won visits Ulsan to inspect AI infrastructure
SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won visited Ulsan to inspect the group’s progress in artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure and manufacturing AI transformation (AX). Accompanied by several key CEOs from member companies, Chey visited the SK AI Data Center Ulsan and the SK Innovation Ulsan CLX complex.
The SK AI Data Center Ulsan, being developed in partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS), is the first site in the group’s nationwide 15GW AI infrastructure plan. The project involves an investment of approximately 7 trillion won and aims to be operational by late 2027. The group plans to expand this into a larger AI data center cluster in the Yeongnam region totaling over 2GW.
At the SK Innovation Ulsan CLX, Chey inspected the implementation of manufacturing AX, which integrates AI into refining and chemical processes to optimize operations, safety, and energy efficiency. This system, referred to as ‘dual brain,’ combines AI data analysis with the experience of human engineers. This visit follows Chey’s June declaration of a management shift toward AI transformation, supporting the group’s strategy to become an ‘AI full-stack provider’ spanning semiconductors, data centers, and industrial applications.
