SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won’s personal SK Hynix purchase sparks stock rally

SK Group Chairman Chey Tae‑won bought 3,620 ordinary shares of SK Hynix on the open market, valued at about 4.79 billion won. The purchase, disclosed in a filing on July 31, is his first personal stake in the chipmaker; previously he exercised control through the group’s largest shareholder, SK Square. The shares had fallen more than 50 % from a record high of 2.99 million won on June 25 to 1.32 million won on the day of the purchase. After the filing, SK Hynix stock jumped roughly 25 % to around 1.66 million won, giving Chey an estimated paper gain of 10‑13 billion won. The rally was reinforced by a broader semiconductor rebound, with the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index rising 8.19 % on the same day. Analysts interpreted the move as a signal of confidence and responsible‑management intent, prompting a surge in investor sentiment toward Korean memory stocks.
