SK hynix approves $38.3bn investment in South Korean semiconductor fabs
SK hynix has approved a $38.3 billion investment to construct two new semiconductor fabrication facilities in South Korea. The first facility, the Yongin Y2 plant, will be located at the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster and is scheduled to begin construction in July 2027. This plant will focus on manufacturing DRAM products, including high-bandwidth memory for AI and high-performance computing applications. The second facility will focus on NAND flash production at an existing manufacturing site, with its first cleanroom expected to open in December 2028.
In the global memory market, Samsung Electronics has reached a 39.4% share of the DRAM market in the first half of the year, up from 34% during the same period last year. This growth comes amid a memory chip demand super cycle. Samsung also reported a 22% share in the global smartphone market, driven by the Galaxy S26 series, and a 30.6% share in the global TV market.
