SK hynix breaks ground on $4 billion AI chip packaging plant in Indiana
SK hynix has broken ground on a new advanced packaging facility in West Lafayette, Indiana, representing an investment of over $4 billion. The plant is designed to serve as a critical production hub for high-bandwidth memory (HBM), which is essential for artificial intelligence systems.
The facility is expected to begin cleanroom operations in late 2028, with mass production of next-generation HBM4E chips slated to commence in the second half of 2029. To support local innovation, the company has signed a research and development agreement with Purdue University and will host an AI semiconductor R&D center at the site.
CEO Kwak Noh-Jung warned that the global shortage of advanced memory chips is likely to persist through 2030. He noted that the industry is shifting from standardized commodity chips to highly customized products for AI applications, a trend that may reduce traditional market volatility. While the company is expanding its U.S. footprint to be closer to major customers like Nvidia, Microsoft, and Google, Kwak stated that SK hynix remains open to further global investments provided sufficient infrastructure is available.
