SK hynix breaks ground on $4B AI memory packaging hub in Indiana
SK hynix has broken ground on a new advanced packaging facility in West Lafayette, Indiana, representing an investment of over $4 billion. The site will serve as a production and R&D hub for next-generation High Bandwidth Memory (HBM), which is critical for AI applications. The project is expected to create approximately 7,000 direct and indirect jobs and is supported by the U.S. CHIPS and Science Act, with potential direct funding of up to $458 million and $500 million in loans.
Mass production of HBM at the Indiana site is projected to begin in the second half of 2028 or 2029. To further expand its global footprint, the company is also considering a new memory chip plant in Japan's Miyagi Prefecture and plans to reactivate its NAND manufacturing capacity in Dalian, China, by 2027.
Amid these expansions, SK hynix CEO Kwak Noh-jung has predicted a potential historic supply shortage in the memory market by 2027, driven by the rapid growth of AI workloads that continue to outpace production capacity.
