SK hynix explores optical AI technology and potential Japan factory investment

The company is researching the use of optical interconnects and co-packaged optics (CPO) to overcome the ‘AI memory wall.’ In a study co-authored with researchers from MIT and the University of Virginia, the firm suggests that replacing traditional copper links with light-based connections could significantly improve data transfer efficiency and scalability for next-generation AI platforms.

Simultaneously, SK hynix is reportedly considering a multi-trillion won investment to construct a memory semiconductor factory in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. While the company has not officially confirmed the decision, stating only that any location with necessary infrastructure could be a candidate, reports indicate that SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won has recently visited the region. The potential move highlights a broader trend of semiconductor supply chain restructuring, leveraging Japan’s robust ecosystem of manufacturing equipment and materials to support global AI demand.
