OpenAI and Samsung deepen collaboration on next-generation AI chips

Major players in the artificial intelligence and semiconductor sectors are deepening strategic partnerships to secure hardware infrastructure. OpenAI has announced significant progress in its collaboration with Samsung Electronics regarding the joint research and production of next-generation AI chips. This expansion follows previous agreements for memory chip supplies for OpenAI’s Stargate data center project.

Samsung is simultaneously diversifying its AI investments. The company recently led a €3 billion Series D funding round for the French AI lab Mistral AI. Additionally, reports indicate Samsung is in discussions with Anthropic regarding custom chip manufacturing. These moves suggest a strategy to become a primary hardware partner for leading AI laboratories.

In the memory sector, SK hynix is shifting its focus toward “all-stack AI memory” and system-level co-design to meet the evolving needs of AI workloads. The company aims to move beyond simple capacity and speed competition to provide integrated solutions that include 3D stacking technologies and heterogeneous integration.
