SK Hynix’s Gwangju Fab Plans Spur Online Speculation After Chairman Follows Local Food Account

SK Group chairman Choi Tae‑won was seen following an Instagram account that promotes Gwangju restaurants. The follow was posted on the university community platform Everytim, where users highlighted the account’s 120,000 followers. The discovery sparked online debate that the move could signal SK Hynix’s participation in the Honam semiconductor cluster.

South Korean officials have announced a plan to create a second domestic semiconductor production hub in the Honam region. SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics are each slated to invest about 400 trillion won to build four memory‑fab clusters, with two sites in Gwangju and two in the broader southwest area. The Gwangju site, near the former military airport, offers ample flat land and good logistics. SK Hynix officials said the location is sufficiently large and that the company will proceed in coordination with the government. The investment plan was confirmed at a mega‑project meeting chaired by President Lee Jae‑myung.
