Sk On battery factory reports NMP contamination in Iváncsa
The Sk On battery factory in Iváncsa, Hungary, has reported NMP (n-methyl-2-pyrrolidone) contamination in a monitoring well located on its premises. The contamination was discovered on August 28. NMP is a solvent noted for its potential harmful effects on the human body, including being teratogenic.
Local authorities have taken immediate action. The Mayor of Iváncsa, Tibor Molnár, has ordered the testing of all drilled and dug wells throughout the village to ensure public safety. This testing will be conducted by the independent, accredited firm Bálint Analitika Kft., with costs covered by the municipality.
While the contamination is a concern, officials stated that the piped drinking water supply is not affected, as it is delivered via pipelines from Ercsi. The factory has reported that it has stopped the processes responsible for the leak and has eliminated the source of the pollution. A second-degree water alert was issued on September 2 following recommendations from water authorities.
