SK On Hungary battery factory fined 100 million HUF for pollution
The SK On Hungary battery factory in Iváncsa has been issued a 100 million HUF fine by the Fejér County Government Office. The penalty follows an incident where operations deviating from approved permits caused groundwater pollution.
In early September, the company’s own monitoring wells detected N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), an industrial solvent with potential teratogenic effects. In response, authorities have ordered the immediate suspension of the operation of the pipelines and wells responsible for the contamination, as well as any other pipes and wells with identical technical designs.
While the local municipality conducted tests on 55 residential wells and found no traces of the substance in the local water supply, the environmental investigation and regulatory actions continue. This fine follows a previous 100 million HUF penalty imposed by occupational safety authorities regarding air quality monitoring and protective equipment for workers.
