SK On Hungary battery plant reports NMP contamination in monitoring well
The municipality of Ivancsa announced that water samples taken from 55 drilled and dug wells showed no signs of contamination. This follows reports from the SK On Hungary battery factory, which discovered NMP (n-methyl-2-pyrrolidone) contamination in a monitoring well located within the plant's internal area. NMP is a solvent known to have harmful effects, including potential teratogenic properties.
Local authorities noted that the piped drinking water for the settlement is supplied from Ercsi, meaning the municipal supply remains unaffected. SK On Hungary confirmed the contamination and stated that it has suspended the operation of the relevant equipment as part of its safety protocols. The company has pledged full cooperation with official investigations.
The LIGA Iron and Metal Industry Federation has requested that the National Occupational Safety Committee address accidents and health risks associated with battery factories in Hungary. The federation is also contacting local Member of Parliament Ervin Nagy to advocate for worker rights regarding healthy and safe working environments.
