SK On Hungary layoffs spark union backlash in Iváncsa
Workers at the SK On Hungary Kft. battery plant in Iváncsa have faced sudden layoffs, prompting a formal response from the LIGA Youth Workers’ Interest Organization (LIMÉSZ). The union has condemned the immediate dismissals, stating they violate requirements of human dignity and that any potential mass layoffs must strictly follow statutory legal procedures.
The labor organization has requested detailed information regarding the scope and justification of the planned headcount reductions, noting significant anxiety and uncertainty among the workforce.
In addition to the job cuts, the union is seeking clarification on two recent 100 million forint fines imposed on the company by regulatory authorities. In August, the company was penalized for serious safety violations that endangered employee health. A subsequent 100 million forint fine was issued following findings that the facility operated in a manner contrary to its permits, resulting in groundwater contamination. Authorities have ordered the suspension of specific infrastructure responsible for the environmental breach.
SK On Hungary Kft. stated that the workforce decisions were “unavoidable” due to the need to align operations with current business conditions. The company maintains it will provide necessary support to affected employees and fulfill its obligations to the local community.
