SK Telecom and KISTI develop quantum cryptography network simulation technology

Researchers from the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI) and SK Telecom have developed a world-first technology to verify the performance and operational feasibility of quantum cryptography networks using a digital twin approach. This technology allows for the real-time integration of a Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) simulator with a Kubernetes-based key management system.

By utilizing international standards such as ETSI GS QKD 014 and ETSI GS QKD 023, the system enables users to simulate various physical conditions—including communication distance and optical loss—within a virtual environment. This prevents the need for costly and difficult physical testing on expensive quantum hardware. The technology ensures interoperability, allowing different organizations and companies to connect diverse quantum cryptography equipment through standardized interfaces.

The development was showcased at the ECOC 2026 event in Malaga, Spain. The project aims to enhance the efficiency of quantum network deployment and support the commercialization of quantum cryptography, a market projected to grow significantly by 2030.
