Skagway Ferry Terminal closed due to structural damage

The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities has suspended all vehicle and passenger ferry operations at the Skagway Ferry Terminal due to structural damage. Cracks were first observed in the concrete abutment supporting the passenger walkway and vehicle transfer bridge on Thursday, August 13. Following further cracking on Saturday, August 15, engineers ordered the terminal's closure.

No injuries, vessel contacts, or environmental releases were reported during the incident. The M/V Hubbard completed its scheduled port call safely before the operational closure took effect.

Response efforts include mobilizing commercial divers to inspect the underwater anchor system and disconnecting electrical service to the affected float. A crane and barge are being deployed to remove the vehicle transfer bridge and passenger walkway from the damaged abutment. While there is currently no timeline for when service will resume, the Alaska Marine Highway System is contacting passengers with existing reservations to arrange refunds and alternative travel plans.
