Skating Association selection controversy prompts government intervention
A controversy has emerged regarding the selection process for Taiwan's short track speed skating national team. Five young athletes have met the International Skating Union (ISU) qualifying standards for the 2026-2027 Junior World Cup and World Junior Championships through international and national competitions. However, under current Chinese Taipei Skating Association rules, selection is prioritized based on domestic spring championship results, leaving these qualified athletes unable to participate.
During a Legislative Yuan Education and Culture Committee session, Sports Minister Lee Yang stated that the Sports Ministry has requested the Skating Association to convene an urgent selection meeting. The goal is to reach a clear decision before the October 25 registration deadline to protect the athletes' rights.
The Skating Association noted that while the current selection methods were approved in February, the new leadership team, which took over in June, recognizes there is room for review. The association plans to consult athletes, coaches, and experts when revising selection standards to ensure future fairness and transparency. Additionally, officials addressed concerns regarding the lack of a functional Athletes' Committee within the association, promising guidance to ensure athletes have a voice in decision-making processes.
