Üsküdar University experts discuss pathology and AI in diagnosis

Dr. Eda Yetimoğlu, Head of the Pathology Laboratory Techniques Program at Üsküdar University, has highlighted the critical role pathology laboratories play in diagnosing various diseases, particularly cancer. The process involves the precise preparation of biopsies, surgical materials, and cytological samples to ensure they are suitable for microscopic evaluation by pathologists, which directly informs patient treatment plans.

Pathology laboratory technicians perform essential duties including material reception, macroscopy, tissue tracking, embedding, sectioning with a microtome, staining, and immunohistochemical processes. Dr. Yetimoğlu emphasized that while technicians do not provide the final diagnosis, they are vital professionals in ensuring the accuracy of the diagnostic process.

The field is also undergoing a transformation due to digital pathology and artificial intelligence. AI technologies are expected to assist with image scanning, cell counting, and prioritizing suspicious areas. Dr. Yetimoğlu noted that rather than replacing technicians, these advancements will transform their roles, requiring future professionals to adapt to digital imaging environments.
