Söke Court Advances Derya Buçan Murder Trial, Families Demand Harsher Sentence

The first hearing in the murder case of 28‑year‑old Derya Buçan concluded at the Söke 1st Heavy Penal Court. The trial, which concerns the killing of Buçan by her husband Rıdvan Buçan, was adjourned until 10 September 2026.

The incident occurred on 21 December 2024 near the Selatin Tunnel on the Aydın‑İzmir highway. Initially treated as a traffic accident, a forensic report later determined that Buçan died from a gunshot wound to the head. Rıdvan Buçan was arrested and charged with pre‑meditated murder.

Family members gathered outside the courthouse demanding the maximum penalty, saying, "Adaletin yerini bulmasını istiyoruz" (We want justice to be found) and urging an exemplary ruling to deter further femicides. Women’s rights NGOs are monitoring the case, calling for a precedent‑setting verdict.

The court’s next session is scheduled for 10 September 2026.
