Skellefteå officials dispute reports of mass exodus following Northvolt collapse

Skellefteå officials are disputing characterizations of a mass exodus from the city following Northvolt’s bankruptcy. Samuel Lundqvist, the municipality’s financial officer, argues that recent headlines regarding a mass departure are misleading.

Lundqvist notes that the city experienced an extreme period of population growth between 2018 and 2021, driven by the need for thousands of workers to support Northvolt’s establishment. This influx included people from across Sweden and approximately 50 different countries.

While the loss of Northvolt jobs has led some to move, Lundqvist states that nearly half of those who moved to Skellefteå during the boom period have remained in the municipality, either finding other employment or waiting for new industries to develop. He views the Northvolt era as a success story in terms of its ability to rapidly attract a global workforce to a small northern location.
