Skelmersdale bomb squad evacuates homes after explosive device found

Police in Skelmersdale, Lancashire responded on 29 July to a report of a man wielding a rifle at Beechwood Court. Officers arrested a 47‑year‑old resident on suspicion of firearm possession and conducted searches at a nearby property in Birkrig, aided by the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team.

During the investigation a grenade‑type device, later identified as a replica, was discovered, prompting the evacuation of several flats and a local care home as a precaution. Residents were allowed to return after the device was deemed harmless, though a second evacuation was ordered while searches continued.

John Pohlod has been charged with making an explosive substance with intent to endanger life, two offences of firearm possession with intent to cause fear, and affray. He remains in custody pending a court appearance. Lancashire Police continue to investigate the incident and have asked the public not to speculate while they complete their work.
