Ski touring apparel relies on layering for temperature regulation
Effective ski touring apparel relies on a layering system to manage body temperature during varying levels of exertion and weather conditions. Experts suggest that clothing should address two primary states: movement and rest.
During ascent, the goal is to allow excess heat to escape through breathable layers. For the descent or periods of rest, the focus shifts to retaining warmth. A standard three-layer system for the upper body includes a moisture-wicking base layer, an insulating mid-layer (such as a down or insulation jacket), and a windproof and weatherproof outer shell.
Experienced tourers often recommend starting with a slight chill to prevent overheating during the initial climb. For the lower body, the layering principle is applied with a focus on simplicity and efficiency.
