Skiathos airport jet blasts cause injuries to tourists

Tourists at Alexandros Papadiamantis Airport on the Greek island of Skiathos are increasingly sustaining injuries while attempting to film aircraft takeoffs and landings. The airport is known for having one of the shortest runways in Europe, which requires aircraft to use maximum engine thrust, creating powerful jet blasts.

Observers gathered near the runway, particularly at Xanemos beach, have reported being knocked over by wind speeds comparable to high-category hurricanes. One tourist described the experience as being like a “apocalypse,” noting that the force was strong enough to blow luggage and backpacks into the sea. Local business owners observed that many victims are first-time visitors who do not realize the danger posed by jet blast.

Skiathos Mayor Thodoris Tzoumas defended the right of tourists to photograph aircraft in public areas, stating that safety protocols and markings are in place. He noted that while the phenomenon is significant, individuals who ignore safety signs bear responsibility for their own risks. Similar dangerous trends have been noted at other locations, such as Sint Maarten in the Caribbean.
