Skiathos Airport jet blasts injure two Italian tourists

Two separate incidents involving Italian tourists being injured by aircraft jet blasts have occurred at Skiathos International Airport in Greece within a single week.

On August 13, a 50-year-old Italian woman was injured by the powerful air thrust from a plane's turbines during takeoff. She suffered a broken arm and was treated at the Skiathos Health Centre. This follows a similar incident on August 10, where a 52-year-old Italian woman was knocked to the ground by engine exhaust while plane spotting near the airport fence. That individual suffered a head injury and required airlift transport to a hospital for further treatment.

Skiathos International Airport is a well-known destination for plane spotters because the runway is located near a public beach and road, allowing aircraft to fly at low altitudes. While warning signs are posted around the perimeter, the high-thrust settings required for takeoff at the airport have led to these recent injuries. An investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances surrounding the proximity of the tourists to the aircraft.
