Skiathos Airport pilot offloads luggage to ensure safe takeoff
A pilot at Skiathos Airport in Greece faced intense protests from over 180 Italian tourists after announcing that some luggage had to be left behind to ensure a safe takeoff to Naples.
The captain explained that the aircraft was too heavy for the flight due to a combination of wind conditions and the relatively short runway at Skiathos. To reduce the total weight, the pilot presented the passengers with a choice: either some passengers would have to disembark, or a portion of the luggage would remain on the ground.
Choosing what he described as the ‘lesser evil,’ the pilot allowed all passengers to remain on board while offloading certain bags. The airline committed to transporting the delayed luggage on a subsequent flight to Naples for delivery to the owners. Despite initial heated arguments and concerns regarding lost property, the passengers eventually accepted the decision and responded with applause.
