Skilled trade shortages impact US construction and data center growth

The United States is facing a critical shortage of skilled trade workers, driven by an aging workforce, strict immigration enforcement, and a surge in demand for data center construction. According to a survey by the Association of General Contractors of America, worker shortages are now the primary cause of delays in construction projects.

Ken Simonson, chief economist for the Association, noted that over 50 percent of craft workers were born outside the United States. He suggested that the construction industry needs similar visa provisions to the agricultural sector, allowing for the importation of labor when domestic interest is insufficient.

While wages in the trades are rising, industry leaders emphasize the need for accelerated training and a cultural shift to attract younger workers. Many potential candidates face challenges such as long commutes, low-paid apprenticeships, and a perceived lack of social value compared to office-based professions.
