Skin chafing and irritation: causes, prevention, and treatments

Skin irritation and chafing in the groin and inner thigh areas are common dermatological complaints, often caused by constant friction, moisture, and excessive sweating. These factors can create micro-lesions in the epidermis, leading to redness, itching, burning sensations, and pain.

Management typically involves reducing friction and controlling moisture. Recommendations include gentle cleansing with neutral soap, using protective barriers like petroleum jelly, and choosing quick-drying fabrics instead of cotton to prevent moisture retention. In some cases, irritation may be caused by tight clothing or synthetic materials.

It is important to distinguish simple chafing from clinical conditions that require medical intervention. Symptoms may mimic fungal or bacterial infections, such as cutaneous candidiasis (caused by Candida albicans), tinea cruris (jock itch), impetigo, or erythrasma. Medical treatments may include topical or oral antifungals, antibiotics, corticosteroids, or ointments containing zinc oxide and dexpanthenol to promote healing.
