Skin cycling and preservation methods focus on skin barrier health

New skincare philosophies, such as “skin cycling” and “skin preservation,” are gaining attention as methods to maintain skin health and protect the cutaneous barrier.

Skin cycling involves the rotation of different active ingredients to prevent skin stress, irritation, and sensitivity. Dermatologist Claudio Conforti notes that seasonal changes, such as the transition to autumn, can make the skin barrier more fragile due to fluctuations in humidity and temperature. By alternating products, users can maximize benefits without overwhelming the skin.

Complementing this is the “skin preservation” approach, which shifts the focus from traditional anti-aging to maintaining skin resilience and health. This method prioritizes protecting the skin's natural functions—such as hydration, oxidative stress defense, and collagen production—rather than solely treating existing wrinkles or spots. Key practices include using SPF to combat photoaging and antioxidants to mitigate environmental stressors and pollution.
