Skin hydration: The benefits of moisturizing immediately after bathing
Dermatological experts suggest that applying moisturizer immediately after bathing is a critical step for managing dry, rough skin on areas such as the elbows and feet. This period is referred to as the “golden window” because the skin retains moisture that can be sealed in by topical products, preventing transepidermal water loss.
Rough elbows are often caused by constant friction and a lower concentration of sebaceous glands, which reduces natural oil production. Similarly, the skin on the feet is subject to high pressure and friction, particularly on the heels. Factors such as hot showers, harsh soaps, and dry climates can exacerbate dryness in these regions.
To combat chronic dryness, it is recommended to use thick creams or ointments containing humectants and occlusives. For extremely dry feet, products containing urea or lactic acid may be effective. Experts also advise against aggressive scrubbing or filing of rough skin, as this can cause irritation.
