Skincare experts advise prioritizing skin barrier and sun protection

Skincare experts emphasize the importance of prioritizing skin barrier health and sun protection over complex, multi-step routines or trendy anti-aging products.

Dermatologist Ana Molina suggests using a cosmetic ingredient pyramid to prioritize actives. The foundation should consist of photoprotectors and barrier-repairing hydrators such as glycerin, hyaluronic acid, ceramides, niacinamide, and panthenol. The next level includes antioxidants like vitamin C, vitamin E, and ferulic acid to combat oxidative damage. High-level anti-aging ingredients, such as retinoids, should only be used once the skin's base is well-protected.

Mathilde Thomas, founder of Caudalie, also advises against excessive product accumulation. She suggests that a functional morning routine does not require numerous steps, but should focus on cleansing, a serum, moisturizer, and mandatory sun protection.
