Skincare experts discuss sunscreen application and sesame oil benefits
Dermatological experts emphasize the importance of proper application techniques for skincare and sun protection to ensure efficacy.
Regarding sun protection, Joshua Zeichner of Mount Sinai Hospital notes that the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) listed on packaging is only effective if the correct dosage is applied. The standard measurement is 2 milligrams per square centimeter of skin. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends that adults use approximately one ounce of product—roughly the amount in a shot glass—to cover exposed skin. Experts also suggest the ‘two-finger rule’ for the face and neck to ensure adequate coverage, while warning that common missed areas include the ears, nape of the neck, and the tops of the feet.
Additionally, sesame oil is highlighted for its cosmetic benefits. Derived from Sesamum indicum seeds, the oil is rich in fatty acids such as oleic and linoleic acids, as well as sesamin and sesamolin. Due to its emollient properties, it is used in body oils and cleansers to smooth the skin surface and reduce water loss, making it a useful tool for managing skin dryness when used alongside humectants.
