Skincare layering principles and the growth of Prequel

Effective skincare routines rely on proper layering techniques and ingredient compatibility. The fundamental principle is to apply products from lightest to heaviest, starting with water-based formulas and ending with thicker, occlusive moisturizers. Sunscreen (SPF) should always be the final step in a morning routine to ensure a protective film is not disrupted.

When using active ingredients, timing and combinations are critical to avoid irritation. For example, vitamin C is best used in the morning, while retinol and glycolic acid are more suitable for nighttime use. Certain ingredients, such as benzoyl peroxide and retinol, should not be layered together as they can deactivate each other.

In the commercial sector, the skincare brand Prequel, founded by dermatologist Dr. Samantha Ellis, has seen rapid growth in the US. The brand focuses on fragrance-free, gentle formulas designed to strengthen the skin barrier. Prequel has recently expanded its availability, launching a selection of its popular products at Space NK.
