Skincare recommendations for skin changes during pregnancy
Pregnancy causes hormonal variations that can lead to skin sensitivity, dryness, spots, and stretch marks. While maintaining a skincare routine is important, certain ingredients should be avoided or re-evaluated during this period.
Dr. Nathalie Díaz Lazala, an aesthetic physician, highlights retinoids—specifically retinol—as a primary concern. Although retinol is a widely used anti-aging ingredient and is often found in stretch mark treatments, its use is generally recommended to be suspended during pregnancy.
While oral retinoids are known to be associated with risks of malformations, studies on topical retinoids have not shown a significant increase in congenital defects. However, because a small amount can be absorbed through the skin, specialists advise consulting a doctor to find safe alternatives.
