Skûlenboarch bridge status remains uncertain as Minister awaits national assessment
Minister of Infrastructure and Water Management Vincent Karremans has stated that a decision regarding the future of the Skûlenboarch bridge cannot be made immediately. The minister is currently awaiting the conclusion of a national assessment of major ministry projects before providing clarity on the bridge's status.
The bridge has been in poor condition since a collision in 2024, resulting in weight restrictions that force heavy traffic to take detours. Rijkswaterstaat has investigated several options, including complete removal, converting the structure for pedestrians and cyclists only, replacing it with a new bridge, or installing an aqueduct. However, a feasibility study by the province of Fryslân regarding an aqueduct did not yield a viable plan.
The Skûlenboarch bridge is part of the Lemmer-Delfzijl main waterway program, which aims to replace eight bridges to ensure safe and efficient passage for larger vessels. While four other bridges in Fryslân are already in the planning phase, the specific approach for Skûlenboarch remains undecided.
