Skoda and Volkswagen expand electric lineups amid leadership shifts
The European automotive sector is undergoing significant strategic shifts, highlighted by new electric vehicle (EV) launches and leadership changes. Skoda is expanding its electric lineup with the Peaq, a large seven-seater SUV offering up to 637 km of range, and the Epiq, a compact SUV. These models aim to address growing demand for spacious, eco-friendly vehicles while competing with aggressive Chinese imports.
To maintain its market position, Skoda is also navigating the transition from internal combustion engines by extending the lifespan of models like the Fabia, Kamiq, and Scala into the 2030s. However, the brand faces pressure to develop affordable entry-level EVs to prevent losing customers to lower-priced Asian competitors.
In a major leadership move, Klaus Zellmer, the current CEO of Skoda, is set to become the CEO of Volvo Cars on October 1, 2027, succeeding Hakan Samuelsson. Zellmer, credited with Skoda’s recent financial success and sales growth, will lead Volvo during a massive product offensive involving 13 new models by 2030. Meanwhile, Volkswagen is also pushing into the affordable EV segment with the ID. Cross, a compact SUV starting at approximately 28,000 euros, designed to bridge the gap between traditional combustion models and high-end electric vehicles.
