Skopje Aqueduct conservation to proceed with 30 million denars

Approximately 30 million denars have been allocated to continue the conservation of the Skopje Aqueduct. Vesela Čestoeva, Director of the Administration for Protection of Cultural Heritage, stated that property rights issues involving private land are expected to be resolved through expropriation proceedings by the end of December.

Currently, four expropriation procedures are underway to allow conservation work to move from state-owned land to sections of the site held in private ownership. Resolving these legal matters is a prerequisite for both continuing the conservation of the arches and installing video surveillance at the location. The City Conservation Center is performing the physical conservation of the arches, while the Administration for Protection of Cultural Heritage manages the administrative procedures and permits. The aqueduct is intended to be a featured site in the ‘Skopje – European Capital of Culture 2028’ program.
