Skopje launches first line of new Urban Train project
The North Macedonian government has officially launched the “Urban Train” project, starting with the first of three planned lines connecting Zelenikovo to the New Railway Station in Skopje. The project was inaugurated with a symbolic journey involving Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Aleksandar Nikolloski, and various local officials.
To facilitate the service, the railway infrastructure underwent a complete reconstruction to increase speed capacity and safety. The first line operates with three trains following a set schedule, passing through stations including Novo Zelenikovo, Oreshani, Jane Sandanski, Dračevo, and Lisiče. The service aims to provide faster, cheaper, and more efficient public transport, connecting peripheral areas of Skopje to the city center and integrating with the existing public transport system.
Plans are currently underway for the second and third lines. The second line is intended to connect the New Railway Station through Butel and Skopje-Sever to Gjorče Petrov, while the third line will run from the New Railway Station through Avtokomanda and Madžari to Ilinden.
