Skopje mosquito epidemic sparks political dispute over disinfection efficacy
A political and public health dispute has emerged in Skopje regarding a mosquito-borne epidemic. As of August 18, there have been 38 reported cases and four deaths, with 37 cases concentrated in the Skopje region. The deceased were men aged between 62 and 83.
The SDSM political party has criticized Mayor Orce Gjorgjievski, alleging that mosquito control measures were either too late, too weak, or missed key hotspots. They questioned the effectiveness of previous treatments and called for accountability regarding stagnant water and untreated areas.
In response, VMRO-DPMNE defended the city's actions, stating that 13 disinfection treatments have already been conducted this season. They provided a detailed schedule of aerial and ground treatments against both larvae and adult mosquitoes, noting that more than 20 sessions are planned before the season ends.
Meanwhile, residents report that the mosquito situation remains alarming despite official disinfection efforts. Citizens have pointed to uncleaned debris and fallen trees from recent storms as potential breeding grounds, expressing frustration over the continued presence of insects, particularly affecting children.
