Skopje issues over 80,000 euros in fines for illegal waste disposal

Skopje Mayor Orce Gjorgjievski announced that legal entities have been fined over 80,000 euros for improper waste disposal. The fines target companies and construction sites responsible for illegal dumping in parks, boulevards, and near containers.

Gjorgjievski emphasized the need for a communal police force to combat these issues more effectively, noting that the current inspection system faces limitations. He called on the Assembly to pass the Law on Local Self-Government to enable the formation of such a force.

To address the issue of residents choosing to pay fines rather than using the Drisla landfill for bulky waste, the City of Skopje plans to introduce weekly free disposal services for all residents. The mayor noted that illegal dumping is driven by a minority of irresponsible citizens and companies leaving furniture and other large items in public spaces.
