Skopje Mayor renovates Macedonia Square following corruption allegations

Current Skopje Mayor Orce Georgievski is undertaking horticultural renovations at Macedonia Square to address the neglected state of the area, which locals have referred to as a meadow. The project includes landscaping and replacing damaged floor tiles near the ‘Maked’ Gate.

This cleanup follows allegations of significant financial mismanagement during the tenure of former Mayor Petre Shilegov. Reports suggest that a project involving a 6,000 square meter lawn and several trees at the square cost 500,000 euros, despite the actual market value of the materials being a small fraction of that amount. Critics allege that approximately 480,000 euros are unaccounted for.

Additional claims involve other failed green projects under Shilegov, including a non-existent green roof at the Mavrovka shopping center and expensive landscaping at the Central Post Office. There are also allegations regarding the misappropriation of high-quality stone from the area near the City Stadium for use in a private residence.
