Skopje Neurology Clinic reports rising stroke cases among youth
Medical professionals at the Neurology Clinic in Skopje are reporting an increase in stroke cases, noting a concerning trend where the condition is affecting younger populations. The clinic recently treated a 16-year-old girl, marking the youngest patient recorded in approximately six weeks.
Jovan Bozhinovski, director of the Neurology Clinic, identified several primary risk factors, including high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, unhealthy lifestyles, stress, alcohol consumption, and the use of psychotropic substances. Genetic factors also play a role. Doctors warn that 30 to 40 percent of patients suffer permanent consequences, such as paralysis, speech difficulties, and disability.
To mark World Stroke Day, the clinic is organizing free medical screenings, including carotid artery Doppler examinations, blood pressure checks, and glucose and cholesterol testing to assist in risk assessment.
