Skybird targets $2 million Sydney Stakes at Randwick
Trainer Mitchell Freedman is preparing the sprinter Skybird for the $2 million Sydney Stakes (1200m) at Randwick this Saturday. The mare, who recently won the Gilgai Stakes at Flemington, is expected to compete on a rain-affected surface following significant rainfall in the region.
Skybird faces a wide draw from barrier 18 in a field of 16 runners. Ben Melham has been secured to ride the mare, who has shown strong form on wet tracks, including a notable performance in the T J Smith Stakes earlier this year. If Skybird secures a top-two finish, her career earnings will exceed $2 million.
Freedman noted that the mare is in excellent condition and is holding her form well. While the Sydney Stakes is a major target, the trainer remains focused on the upcoming Champions Sprint at Flemington next month.
