Skyscraper Day honors architectural pioneers and tallest buildings

September 3 marks Skyscraper Day, an informal annual celebration honoring the legacy of American architect Louis Sullivan, a pioneer of modern high-rise buildings. The date coincides with Sullivan's birthday.

Globally, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai remains the world's tallest completed building at 828 meters. However, its record is challenged by the Jeddah Tower in Saudi Arabia, which is under construction and designed to exceed one kilometer in height. In Romania, the SkyTower in Bucharest holds the national record for height, standing at 137 meters with 37 floors.

The evolution of skyscrapers is rooted in innovations like the metal frame structure, pioneered by architects such as William Le Baron Jenney with the Home Insurance Building in Chicago. This structural shift allowed buildings to grow taller by transferring weight to an internal skeleton rather than thick walls.
