SkyWalk project faces protests over environmental impact in Passo Paradiso
Environmental and heritage associations are protesting the construction of the SkyWalk, a massive glass-floored cantilevered platform planned for Passo Paradiso near the border of Lombardy and Trentino.
Proposed by Società Impianti Turistici (SIT S.p.A.), the structure will be located at an altitude of 2,585 meters in the Monticelli area. The project aims to attract 'adrenaline tourism' by offering a 360-degree view of the Camonica and Sole valleys. The development is part of a broader infrastructure upgrade in the Ponte di Legno-Tonale area, which includes new cable cars and snow-making facilities.
Italia Nostra has expressed strong opposition, stating the project will 'annihilate and mock any form of respect' for the local landscape and its 'genius loci.' They argue the structure will disrupt the alpine environment and threaten local fauna, such as eagles and white ptarmigans. Similarly, Mountain Wilderness Italia has called for a halt to the project, warning it could lead to overtourism and act as a 'disgrace' to the Passo Paradiso landscape. Construction is expected to be completed between 2027 and 2028.
