Slaney Flour begins construction on new Wexford milling facility
Construction has commenced on a new flour milling facility in Ballycarney, County Wexford, as part of a joint venture named Slaney Flour. The project, involving Hemelter Ireland and Ballycarney Grain Ltd, represents an investment exceeding €50 million.
The facility is designed to have a milling capacity of 300 tonnes per day and an annual grain production capacity of approximately 100,000 tonnes, resulting in roughly 80,000 tonnes of flour. The site will include wheat storage for about 24,000 tonnes and features an innovative square silo design.
This development aims to strengthen Ireland’s food supply chain and reduce the nation’s reliance on flour imports, which currently total approximately 260,000 tonnes annually from markets including the United Kingdom, Germany, and France. By increasing domestic capacity, the project seeks to mitigate risks associated with geopolitical uncertainty and weather patterns while supporting Irish tillage farmers and the €1.1 billion domestic bakery sector. Enterprise Ireland is providing support for the project.
