Slapy Reservoir mussel rescue operation continues
An emergency rescue operation is underway at the Slapy Reservoir in the Czech Republic to save thousands of endangered mussels stranded on exposed banks due to receding water levels. The Czech Union for Nature Conservation (ČSOP), in coordination with the state enterprise Povodí Vltavy, has already successfully relocated more than 95,000 mussels, including rare species such as the thick-shelled river mussel, back into the water.
Despite recent rainfall, the water level remains low following a prolonged period of drought, and the receding water continues to expose new groups of animals. Conservationists emphasize that the situation remains critical and are calling for continued public assistance, both through direct volunteer work on the muddy banks and via financial contributions.
Experts warn that mussels play a vital role in freshwater ecosystems by filtering water and serving as indicators of environmental health. While a wave of solidarity has seen volunteers traveling from as far as Prague to assist, organizers stress that the task is too large for professional staff alone and require ongoing community support to prevent mass die-offs.
