Slava traditions: Gift-giving customs and historical evolutions

Traditional customs surrounding gift-giving during the Slava season involve specific etiquette and historical evolutions. In some folk beliefs, certain items are avoided to prevent bringing negative energy or misfortune to the host. These include sharp objects like knives or scissors, mirrors, medical devices, and clocks. Additionally, it is believed that giving empty wallets or hollow dishes can symbolize poverty, while pearls are sometimes associated with sorrow.

Historically, the nature of Slava gifts has shifted significantly. Ethnologists note that in the past, guests brought practical items available in their households, such as apples, walnuts, flour, or dried fruit. During times of scarcity, even salt was a meaningful gift. Sugar cubes were once highly valued tokens, particularly for children. The modern prevalence of gifting coffee, sugar, wine, and oil emerged more prominently during the second half of the 20th century as lifestyles changed.
