Slavcho Megerov detained for murder of businessman Iliyan Filipov

The Plovdiv District Court has ordered the detention of 51-year-old Slavcho Megerov, accused of the premeditated murder of businessman and PFC Botev Plovdiv owner Iliyan Filipov. The fatal incident occurred on September 30, 2026, in a residential building in the Hristo Smirnenski district, where Filipov was shot once in the head.

Prosecutors allege the primary motive stems from unsettled financial disputes involving illegal sports betting, often referred to as 'cherno toto'. Evidence presented in court suggests that Megerov and the victim were involved in unregulated bets ranging from 15,000 to 20,000 BGN. Investigators have utilized surveillance footage to track Megerov's movements, including his use of a Peugeot vehicle belonging to his sister and his disposal of clothing in a container.

A key witness, Lyudmila Racheva, reported seeing a masked man with a handgun on the stairs of the building shortly before the shooting. While the defense maintains that there is no direct evidence or weapon to link Megerov to the crime, the court ruled that a chain of circumstantial evidence supports the prosecution's case. Megerov was apprehended by police during an operation in Sofia following the incident.
