Slavi Binev, former MEP and sports official, shot dead in Sofia

Slavcho (Slavi) Penchev Binev, a prominent Bulgarian businessman, former Member of the European Parliament, and former president of the Bulgarian Taekwondo Federation, was shot dead in his home in the Pavlovo district of Sofia on October 24.

Following the incident, police detained three men on the Trakia motorway near the Trayanovi Vrata tunnel. Two of the suspects are Turkish citizens, while the third holds a Bulgarian ID card. Prosecutors have charged one of the Turkish nationals, Eyup Temiz, with intentional murder, alleging he shot Binev in the face. The prosecution is seeking permanent arrest for Temiz, noting that the victim and the accused were long-time acquaintances with business ties.

Investigators are currently exploring motives related to unsettled financial relations or a property dispute involving a large-scale construction investment. While initial reports suggested a possible dispute between acquaintances, authorities have not officially classified the incident as a contract killing. Two firearms were recovered during the arrests, one of which was reportedly discarded from the suspects' vehicle during their flight.
