Slavko Vinčić appointed referee for Argentina‑Spain World Cup final

FIFA announced that Slovenian referee Slavko Vinčić will officiate the 2026 World Cup final between Argentina and Spain on Sunday. Vinčić, a FIFA‑listed official since 2010, has refereed the 2024 UEFA Champions League final, a Euro 2024 semifinal, and matches at two previous World Cups.

The pick comes amid criticism that recent refereeing decisions have favoured Argentina and after Real Madrid supporters voiced displeasure over a controversial Champions League call. Vinčić was also mentioned in a 2020 police raid on a prostitution ring in Bosnia and Herzegovina, but he faced no charges and was released. He will be joined by fellow Slovenians Tomaz Klančnik and Andraz Kovacic as assistants, Jordanian fourth official Adham Makhadmeh, and a VAR crew led by German Bastian Dankert.
